Identity: Zhongshan Zhuang - Michael Gordon Shapiro

Michael Gordon Shapiro's musical life began one fateful day in childhood when he sat down at a piano (which he'd never studied) and started picking out Beatles songs by ear. A kindly aunt, happening upon this performance, threw her hands in the air and insisted that Michael take piano lessons at once - underscoring her sentiment by donating a piano.

Now somewhat older, Michael has written music for eight feature films (including "Home Room", starring Victor Garber and Erika Christensen), several video games (including "Star Trek Conquest", which your nephew may have played on his Nintendo Wii), and numerous trailers, industrials, science park rides, TV shows, and other entertainment industry miscellany. During the dot com era, Michael was music director for Boston-based Zoesis Studios, where he wrote orchestral scores for video games, and designed software that allows music to emotionally change in response to events in games as they happen.

In his fleeting spare time, Michael also enjoys writing for musical theater. His short musicals have enjoyed productions throughout the United States and abroad.

Michael has a relatively nonmusical B.S. in Cognitive Science from Carnegie Mellon, a Masters in Music Composition from New York University, and a certificate in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television from the University of Southern California. He is also a graduate of the respected ASCAP Film Music Workshop. He has studied composition and orchestration with Hollywood veteran Jack Smalley, and composition with Larry Bell at the New England Conservatory.
